Nauders

A traditional highlight of the alpine summer

When festively decorated cattle return from the alpine pastures to the valley, Nauders celebrates the end of a successful summer on the alpine pastures.

The cattle drive in Nauders marks the festive end of the alpine summer every year. When the livestock return safely from the alpine pastures, farmers, dairymen and herdsmen give thanks for an accident-free summer and celebrate this special occasion with a traditional festival.

Around 2,000 cows, cattle, calves, horses, sheep and goats spend the summer on the Nauders alpine pastures at an altitude of between 1,880 and 1,980 metres. Depending on the weather, the animals graze there for around 90 to 120 days before returning to the valley in autumn.

The cattle drive is not only an important part of farming culture, but also an impressive experience for visitors and locals alike. Festively decorated animals, living traditions and the special atmosphere make this day a highlight in Nauders’ calendar of events.
