Wiesenhof - Falkaunsalm (1.936 m)

A lovely half-day walk across mountain meadows and alpine pastures.

The starting point for this enjoyable walk is at the final hairpin bend below the Wiesenhof, at 1,560 m, at the junction of the forest track leading to the Falkauns Alm. There is a small lay-by here where you can park your car. Follow the signs to the Wiesenhof on the left and you’ll reach this beautifully situated farm in just a few minutes. A forest track begins here, taking you across lovely, biodiverse meadows whilst you enjoy the fabulous views of the Kaunertal valley. Follow this track until you reach the junction marked ‘Oberfalpetan, 1,630 m’. Now keep to the right towards Falkauns Alm and, immediately after the bend, join the footpath.
Follow the well-signposted path until, after a short, steeper section, you reach the Falkauns Alm mountain pasture. Continue uphill across the pasture to the alpine hut, which is a lovely place to stop for refreshments during the summer months. After a rest to take in the stunning panoramic views, begin the descent along the forest track. You’ll soon reach the ‘Hahntennen’, a lovely meadow at 1,870 metres above sea level. At the next junction (do not turn off towards Kaunerberg here!), stay on the forest track heading left for a further two hairpin bends. Only when you reach a wildlife feeding station at around 1,780 metres above sea level do you turn right and follow the cart track towards Kaunerberg. This particularly beautiful stretch of path, running alongside traditionally managed and therefore extremely diverse mountain meadows, takes you back to the familiar forest track at a stream; follow this track to the left and you will soon find yourself above the Wiesenhof farm. With fantastic views, walk past the farm and continue downhill to the starting point.
If you prefer to stay on the forest track at the ‘Wildfütterung’ junction, follow the signposts towards ‘Wiesenhof’ and you will also reach the starting point via this route. However, this route takes you exclusively through the extensive spruce forest, meaning you will miss out on the more varied and very scenic section along the mountain meadows above Wiesenhof.
